Cultivating Cultural Intelligence
Beyond Cultural Competence: Rethinking How We Work with Diverse Communities
Good intentions aren’t enough — and you already know that. Move beyond good intentions and build culturally responsive, community-led practice that actually works. This 5-week professional development cohort supports you to build culturally responsive, community-led practice that creates real impact with diverse communities in Aotearoa New Zealand and across global contexts.

Something Isn't Working — And You Can Feel It
Across Aotearoa New Zealand and across global contexts, well-meaning professionals are hitting the same walls. The gap between intention and impact is real — and it costs communities trust, time, and opportunity.
Surface-Level Engagement
Participation boxes are ticked, but communities remain on the periphery of decisions that affect them.
Consulted, Not Centred
Communities are asked for input — but rarely co-design the solutions.
Competence ≠ Practice
Cultural competence training doesn't automatically translate into meaningful, effective action on the ground.
Trust Is Fragile
Hard to build and easy to lose — especially when communities have been let down before.

There's a gap between intention and impact. This programme exists to close it.
Why This Matters Now
Aotearoa New Zealand as other global contexts are increasingly superdiverse — and this diversity will continue to grow. Yet many systems and services are not designed with this reality in mind.
The Reality
When systems aren't built for diversity, the consequences are real and measurable and costly.
  • Inequitable outcomes
  • Disengagement from services
  • Erosion of community trust
  • Programmes that simply don't land
  • Wasted resources and missed opportunities for real impact
The Opportunity
Practitioners who invest in culturally responsive capability become genuine partners — not just service providers. They build lasting relationships, better outcomes, and more resilient communities.
Better outcomes require better practice. This programme gives you the tools to get there.
This Training Shifts How You Work
This isn't about awareness alone — it's about practice. The shift is subtle but transformative.
Before
"Are we engaging communities?"
The Shift
Moving from compliance to genuine partnership.
After
"Are we doing this in ways that are meaningful, culturally safe, and effective?"
This is about practice — not just awareness. You will leave with concrete tools to apply from day one.

Led by Practice, Grounded in Community
Dr Rachel Mukwezwa Tapera
Founder, Inclusive Research Centre
Community-Led Practice & Inclusive Engagement Practitioner
This programme is led by a practitioner working at the intersection of community, research, and systems change.
With a PhD and extensive experience in community engagement, evaluation, and culturally responsive practice, this work is grounded in both lived experience and real-world application.
Through leadership of the Migrant Neuro-Inclusion Network and the Inclusive Research Centre, the focus has been on strengthening how organisations engage with diverse communities in ways that are relational, respectful, and impactful.
As tangata Tiriti (people in Aotearoa who are here under Te Tiriti o Waitangi), this work is grounded in an ongoing commitment to honouring Te Tiriti, recognising the role of tangata whenua and mana whenua, and ensuring that engagement with diverse communities does not sit in isolation but is aligned with the broader responsibilities and relationships that shape this context.
